I wasn’t even going to post this until Friday morning, but wanted to make sure you knew about it in case you were in the market for a new smartphone. Yesterday Mobile Syrup published their round-up of Black Friday deals in Canada. Buried deep in their long list is the best price I’ve yet seen for an off-contract unlocked device. And yes, I’m aware that it’s only Wednesday. 😉
Anyway, this Friday you can potentially get a second-generation Moto G for $199—a full $50 of its already-low $249 CAD retail price—from Staples.
I first saw deal on RFD. Looking at the fine print on the flyer makes me think that you’ll have to visit your local Staples in person to get one. There will apparently be a “minimum” of 5 units per store—which would be quite a feat, considering that my local Staples hasn’t had a 2nd-gen G in stock ever.
In case you weren’t familiar with Motorola’s refresh of their cheap and cheerful G, here again is Howard’s review. TL;DR it still punches well above its weight as a mid-range device, despite not having LTE or a 1080p display. Previously you could get the G for the same $199—with the additional purchase of a $100 voucher—from SpeakOut Wireless; that deal, however, is long gone.
In terms of hackability the 2014 G is seeing a fair amount of activity on XDA. There’s already a TWRP Custom Recovery which you can use to flash a superuser.zip, and a few custom ROMs as well. As with their other recent devices, Motorola will let you unlock your bootloader with their permission—and likely a voided warranty.
The only other comparable savings I’ve seen on unlocked hardware are from BlackBerry; you can get last year’s Z10 for the same $199 or shell out $50 more for the phablet-sized Z30. But something tells me BlackBerry fans are more likely to be holding out for a red Passport or the new BB Classic.
So as of right now I think this Moto G is the best Black Friday deal for the Canadian smartphone shopper. I’m happy to be proven wrong, of course—if you come across anything better please post it below!
